National agencies in charge of ICT research in each Southeast Asian country have teamed up to identify opportunities of strategic cooperation between Europe and Southeast Asia on ICT research. This initiative is developed under the aegis of the European Commission and of ASEAN and in close liaison with the ICT communities from both regions. Cooperation opportunities will be discussed in detail during a large-scale event to be held on October 6-7, 2008 in Brussels. It is expected that several of them will be submitted to the European FP7 research funding programme, a programme open to international cooperation and granted with a budget of over 9 billion euros over the period 2007-2013 to support research projects in the ICT area.
Time has come for Europe and Southeast Asia to enter into a new phase of S&T (Scientific and Technological) cooperation in ICT (Information and Communications Technologies), both at the bilateral and multilateral levels. This new phase should build upon what has been achieved thus far, should be balanced and of mutual benefit, and should focus on a set of well defined strategic cooperation priorities.
It is in this environment that an ambitious project, named SEACOOP (http://www.eurosoutheastasia-ict.org ), has been launched in October 2007 with the support of the European Commission’s DG Information Society and Media (http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/information_society ) and of ASEAN (http://www.asean.org ). |
